Who lived in the Parish of Kilcooly

Last post we looked at the Mahers of the Civil Parish Buolick, which includes the Township of Ballinastick, where some of Ellen's family lived including her most likely immediate family: Patrick Maher and Bridget Mullally. This time we will look at the Mahers of the Civil Parish of Kilcooly, which includes the Township of Ballynunty, where some of Ellen's close family lived and a candidate for her immediate family. We have proven, beyond any doubt, through DNA testing that Ellen was a close relative of the family of Patrick Maher and Bridget Mulhall, if not their daughter.

Catholics from both the Civil Parishes of Buolick and Kilcooly were part of the Gortnahoe Roman Catholic Parish.

The Tithe Applotments for Ballynunty, and the entire Parish of Kilcooly (sp) were not transcribed correctly on the National Archives of Ireland site. I have notified them, but they said they don't have the staff, at the moment, to fix the errors. The first problem is that the Parish is listed as being in County Galway, even though pages of the book clearly identify the County as Tipperary. The second is that the Townland and owner of the land share the same column in the books and this caused some confusion. At any rate, I've looked at the records page by page as best as I am able, and there was no Maher in Ballinunty in 1826, when the Valuations were done.

Additionally confusing, New Birmingham (which we believe Mary Maher was from) is listed as Glangool. Glangool appears to be listed as an overarching Township of which there are smaller divisions, but again, it isn't clear. Below are two pages that are consecutive in the book, and that include New Birmingham and Ballinunty. You will note several things: one is that Ballinunty's entry is very small. The other is that in New Birmingham there are several Mahers, and a James Mullally.

Entries 243-264 Kilcooly Tithe Valuation 1826

Entries 265 - 289 Kilcooly Tithe Valuation 1826

Entries 290 - End

I have added the actual images for you because if you try to do a simply search of the Tithe Applotment records it will be difficult to find these. They are listed, as I mentioned previously, as being in County Galway.

So, now let's look at what Ballinunty looked like at the time of Griffiths Valuation. You'll note that Patrick Maher actually owned land and leased it. And Patrick Maher was leasing land from Ambrose Going, Esq. Are all these Patrick Mahers the same person?
