The Mahers of Gortnahoe, County Tipperary

My great-grandmother was Ellen Maher. She was born to a Patrick Maher and Bridget Mullally. She married Patrick Murphy in 1871 and became Ellen Murphy.

Numerous newspaper articles and years of research have lead to my determination that she, and her extended family came from Gortnahoe in County Tipperary, which is close to Kilcooley Abbey.

In this blog, I will document my research on the Mahers of Gortnahoe (it may extend to more of County Tipperary as I continue in my research), and some of the history of that region of Ireland in general.

In a recent trip to Ireland, I was given a private

Kilcooley Abbey

tour (by the caretaker) of Kilcooley Abbey, which is no longer open to the public. I will post pictures, from that tour, along with snip-its of the audio recording I made of my conversations with the caretaker. That was an amazing experience, and one that only the luck of the Irish could've brought me.
